As i was retrieving i noticed a whole heap of the line spooling at the top of the spool. When i cast it came off in massive tangles. Happened twice. Will respool and use a swivel i guess.

Good stuff mate. Pays to put a snap swivel right before the lure / clip the lure onto the snap swivel. The lures can cause alot of twist in the line while spinning around in the surf. Also alot easier to 'clip on' a different lure too if needed.
I also do this when using spinners in freshwater , quick and easy to change over spinners , and stops line twist.
By the way , having the swivel right near the lure does 'NOT' effect the fish biting the lure at all imo, if you think it is then just take off the clip ring at the top of your lures, and just clip the snap swivel into the top hole of the lure, surfices as the clip ring and a swivel in one.
Cheers mate , Rick

Top work Dougie...well done that man..!
Next time you hook up, try walking back up the beach as the salmon comes into the shallows, they`re a bugger for flipping out the hook when they`re in the wash, walking backwards keeps tension on the line as you get them in close.
I do the same as Rixter and put a small barrel-type snap swivel on the end of my flouro, makes changing lures a five second job.
Were you using braid or mono Dougie..? line bunching up sounds more like a mono issue with regards to line twist. If your using braid, it would more likely be line tension as your retrieving. Either way, the line needs to be taken off, and re-spooled in a nice, even retrieve.
You now know why so many of us go chasing salmon in the surf with spin gear...you know all about it when they come knocking...lol...
Once again, well done mate, and welcome to the light side of the force...

Thanks guys. Yeah Carl using braid. I've figured out the key to catching fish is to find someone who knows what they are doing and follow their advice exactly (like you and FC). Setup is a 902 catana. 4000 daiwa reel, 5.7kg braid with a 5.7kg leader and a bunch of shiny metals.

I think it's almost certainly the lack of swivel that's been causing me issues. You're spot on with walking back up the back, that's how i ended up finally landing the suckers. I swore very very loudly when the 4th one got off in less than a foot of white water, so frustrating.

This is as much fun as hunting trout on a mirrored lake at sunset watching rises and targetting them. Will almost certainly go back down Thursday night. Thanks again for all the help.

edit :- Having read the other thread i'm going to change all my trebs to inline singles.

excellent. nice work.

If you are already using braid, you should not have line twist problems like a mono. Can you take a pic of your spool so we can understand why it happened to you twice?
