How often are you going to surf fish
If it's once a year, JW at Kmart will set you up. Not as good as other suggestions, but, not as expensive and will last a few years

Just get some second hand ones or borrow a mates one then. I dont have any surf gear anymore otherwise I'd lend you mine.

Yeah just get a kmart rod. Sometimes Anaconda has better stuff on sale.
Or like purple said, borrow from a mate.
Try and see if you like surf fishing. Then later on you can decide to get better gear or not.
As already suggested, get a 12ft at least. Longer is better but tends to heavier and harder to cast, especially with cheap rod and reel. Buy the pre-made rig too if you want.

I'd echo the point (already made) about length/weight. I went as long as possible when I first experimented with surf fishing, but eventually downsized considerably. If you're planning on throwing lures at salmon, you really don't want a heavy rod and reel setup (speaking as a scrawny nerd -- although you might be built like The Rock). Throwing lures repeatedly with a heavy rod does get old, and I suspect you'd need to do it a lot to habituate to it. The weight is less of a concern if you're bait-fishing (unless you're looking at a fair hike from the car park to the fishing spot -- which probably isn't a problem in your case).
Also, if you're into that sort of thing -- especially with the inviting weather in the next week or so! -- you can get more use out of the combo. Take it down to one of the beaches in, say, Westernport and try for some gummies or elephants ... or rays.

Yea I second that. Definitely want to go light as possible if planning on casting lures for sometime walking up and down the beach :thumbsup:
