Beginner going surf fishing

Post by CRAIGR » Thu May 12, 2011 1:17 pm

Gday all
Hoping you can help a beginner with some tips to beach/surf fishing
1 Is time of day or tide more important for best bite
2 what do you use for berley, if any.
3 Where is the best/closest location to Kilsyth(east of melb.)
4 Is there any locations in port phillip or western port
And please give me any other helpful tips you can think of
:Dribble: :Dribble: :Dribble:
I am really keen to get out amongst it
Cheers
Craig

Gunnamatta is not an easy beach to fish, though a lot of people will tell you otherwise.

Best advice

Firstly go fishing, secondly experiment with rigs and bait.

Thirdly don't give up, even when others catch more fish than you.

Have used 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 foot rods, monofilament from whatever was loaded on the JW 350 that you get on the K Mart special, to 15, 20, 25 and 30 pounder on other reels like the JW750.

Have used 1/0 bait holder, poppers both blue and red, 1/0, 2/0and 4/0 suicide/octopus on both running sinker/ezy rig system and also paternoster which have had number 2, 3 and 4 star sinkers and also number 2 and 3 spoon sinkers. Lost the lot to being eaten by the weeds or sand.

Bait used includes chicken in tuna oil, pilchards, squid, turkey in tuna oil.

Caught ONE salmon about the size of the 1/0 bait holder hook!!!, about 5 crabs and a gazillion tons of weed. That's in about 7 years. But I have NOT given up yet. :(
