Surf Reels - Alvey vs Spin Reel.

Hi All,
I need to update the reel on my surf rod (cheap, old Shimano 6000...could go slightly larger). What should I be looking at, a spin reel (like a Shimano Aerlex) or a side cast reel (like an Alvey)? Casting distance and durability are the priority.
Thanks..

What's your budget?

This looks the goods if you're looking for a long cast design: https://www.dinga.com.au/penn-spinfishe ... 92947.html

If you are going to go to a sidecast you will need to be upgrading your rod as well if you want to get the best out of the reel

I am a great believer in sidecast reels. They are just about bulletproof and can take sand and salt water in their stride but unless you have a low ( 150-200mm from butt ) winch mount on your rod, go with the spinning reel.

Would the type of reel depends on what you catch?

About a $200 budget...didnt realise Id have to modify the rod to fit an Alvey (shame, I just want something that can handle getting dropped in the sand and water) The Spinfisher SSV7500 had good reviews...I've never owned a Penn reel

Spinfisher is excellent. Consider a Fin Nor Lethal 100 as well.

I guess you could avoid dropping your reel in the sand and water. Alternatively: https://www.fishingtackleshop.com.au/pr ... -reel.html

Actually I'm pretty sure the SSV Spinfishers have a rubber gasket around the body and some other seals so they're somewhat sand and water resistant, if not up to the same standard as their Slammer III reels.
