Re: how far can you cast with a 9' rod and a 40g slug
I had a similar problem not long ago. Kept snapping at the knot. But I suspect that's because I had quite a bit of leader (around 10m) and it was probably weakening with each cast.
I think it makes sense what Dougie, Carl and others say in that a short leader is best. The knot is outside the last guide and so nothing to catch on.
I will give this a go next time out myself.
I remember Carl mentioning in another post that his leader is around 40cm or so when casting slugs in the surf... Correct me if I'm wrong

Is it worth changing from double Uni to a stronger knot as well? It's just so easy to tie when its windy.

Not very long 40 to 70 CM's I use either a FG or an improved albright knot. In the surf it is all about the reaction bite for salmon so a longer leader isn't really required.tommyfishunter wrote:How long do you generally have your leader? I'm having real problems with my double uni knot breaking every 100 or so casts.poodoo wrote:For fishing slugs the leader knot is always outside of the guides. Firstly because of the number of casts so the knot doesn't weaken also you will get a longer cast every metre helps off the back beach especially if the salmon are out deep.GONE FISHING wrote:Interesting question. Will have to measure once I get back home.
I have a follow on question: do you tie on a short leader or longer leader to get better distance?

I was typing on my mobile.....On a related note i've actually had back surgery twice and casting posture is really really important.

Re: how far can you cast with a 9' rod and a 40g slug
Pretty much as per the advice already given. Short leader, between 400-700mm. For years I've used an improved albright, but I've started using the fg...Adtrac and myself make up our own snap swivels, using good quality swivels, and heavy duty egi snaps. They turn out to be the only type I've used where they never twist round on themselves and lock up.
A small tip for you is instead of carrying a roll of leader and your snaps, is to cut a few 500mm long lengths of leader, and tie a snap onto the end of each one. Saves a couple of minutes if the bite is on and you snap a leader off.
Change your leader every two trips, if not every trip. I cut back the braid to a spot that previously was inside the end eye...as the area around the end eye will havenbeen under a lot of stress from casting..
And btw, Doug is right about posture and casting..
And on youtube, type in slow motion casting...there's some handsome devil on there somewhere...lol..

What strength braid is everyone using?
I've got 20lb power pro on, but i'm thinking of moving down to a 10lb sunline, try and get some more distance into my casts.
