oh great the one i bought must be old stock as it doesn't have a metal ferrule
The older ones, all 13ft btw, i had all failed in the exact same spot at the bottom section join of the three pieces, don't have first hand experience if it was an issue on any of the shorter rods. But it was changed on the 13 and 14fters.

Mine were all 13ft, 3 piece may not be an issue on two piece smaller rods.

Im going through the same, looking for a quality setup and just got me a Penn 850ssm reel from BCF for $99 just yesterday, All metal body, 5+1 S/Steel bearings, Aluminum spool and looks the part! it is heavy but as i plan to put my rod on a stand so weight isnt an issue. Tho there is a combo i didnt like the rod, i do have a cheap POS surf rod ($35 combo from kmart....i know dont laugh) i plan to use and replace when it brakes (most likely the first time i use it) but im throwing up the idea of building a rod from scratch

Those Kmart surf rods are ok. Mine have stood up to some big rays and a decent gummy. Basic, but they work.

Solid choice and great value for money on the penn.

I will say that it must cost near nothing to build thoes rods in china that said it dose seem to have some quality to them, guides look ok so dose the reel seat and cheap grips im not kidding myself it is a cheap rod, once it snaps i will upgrade to something slightly shoter ftom a name brand.
At $35 it did come with a reel.?if you wanna call it that, it felt cheap and grindy hence the penn

The penn reel just seemed tough and im no fan of plastic. The pfluger salt reel looked just as good but was $30 more, then penn to me looked more rugged. I am keeping an eye out for a USA made penn SSM reel to restore just for fun, being i live close to the bass coast im sure it will see action

don't be at all surprised if your still using it in 10+ years some of them cheap rods are built like a tank.

but for $179 i am thinking of getting more Penn Prevail's but will not be getting them at my local BCF

as there $240
