How far can you cast with 12" rod and 3oz sinker?

Post by ingeer » Fri Oct 09, 2015 3:16 pm

Hi Gents,

I was using a 6-8kg 12" graphic surf rod, 3oz snapper/bomb sinker without bait, tried numbers of cast (just stand still, cast with sinker behind me sitting on ground), the best distance i got is close to 80m.

Watched a couple of youtubes boasting pendulum cast, according to them with this outfit one should be able to hit up to 150m.. does the technic really make this HUGE difference??

edit: more info about the outfit: daiwa revos mx 4000 loaded with 15lb braid, about 3~4m 15lb leading mono for casting flexibility.

Cheers,
Ingeer

Hey mate, yeah technique really helps. Sometimes depends on how much length you're giving can influence the swing motion giving you a better throw

3oz is a bit light so 80m is a decent chuck with that. Pendulum casting takes a lot of practice and isnt the only way to throw it a long way. If you utube off ground and brighton casts you can see some easier methods to improve your distance.
Cast, catch and put it back

200m plus is possible by the pros with 3oz.

You should go up in leader as 15lb is too light for 3oz, it will snap.

I have heard the rule of thumb 10lb per oz for distance casting which is very close to my own experience.

I can't surf cast for sh*t. Lol. I just end up with cut up fingers. I'll just stick to dropping baits over the side of the boat haha

Tightening your drag might help with the cut fingers.

It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them
