Help with surf rods
Hey guys
I need some help pick a new surf outfit as I have never had one before, would be mainly after something that I can spin for salmon with but also wouldn't mind catching the odd gummy if possible.
Something decent but still cheepish.

Re: Help with surf rods
A 902 Catana is nice for salmon and for $140 (lower if you can find a sale) for a combo it is really good value. Not sure I'd risk it on gummies though, the big ones can dish up some punishment and you're always a chance of hooking a huge ray when chasing them so you might want something heavier.
You'd most likely want different reels for targeting those species anyway.

Re: Help with surf rods
The trouble you have is a spin stick is going to struggle getting the distance of a 13" surf rod for bait soaking, and your arm will be dead trying to spin with a longer heavier rod. If you want something to handle everything, I would do the same as above, and go with the 9" Catana. It's not idea for soaking baits in the surf but will still do the job.
Are u chasing gummies off the surf or in western port? If your aren't contending with big breakers the Catana will prolly be fine

Re: Help with surf rods
If you want to spin, I can highly recommend a Wilson blue steel 10ft rod. I've seen them for $99. They are light, have Fuji gear and can cast heavier lures than a catana. My mate has one and I wish I bought that instead of a shimano 9 ft
To fish or not to fish...NOT TO FISH ??Yea...like that's even an option !

Re: Help with surf rods
Thanks for the replays guys, I would be fishing for gummies off western port.
What sort of reel would I be looking for with these sorts of rods?

Re: Help with surf rods
4000 size reel with 15lb braid for the salmon, 8000 size reel with 30lb line for the gummies.

Re: Help with surf rods
20lb is fine, try and learn how to tie an FG knot to attach the leader. Its a good knot and should last more than on session.

Re: Help with surf rods
for salmon i just use a short leader that is kept outside the guides and tied on with a double uni. while the fg is a great knot it takes to long to tie to bother for something like salmon where a 50cm leader is more than enough so there is no real need for the knot to go through the guides.
