Storing your catch?

Post by fishaholic » Fri Jul 08, 2011 11:28 am

Hi all,

I was wondering how long is safe to store your fish fillets in the freezer?

We have some King George Whiting fillets in the freezer that were caught in February.

That means the fillets have been in the freezer for nearly 5 months.

Are they still going to be OK to eat and how long in general should you keep fish fillets for?

Thanks

They will be fine to eat, they may lack some flavour and moisture though.

If it's an option, try and get hold of a vacuum sealer unit, they are a little pricey, but well worth it. I have fish I caugh in late Feb that we had for dinner last night and it was just like it was caught yesterday.

This is the unit we have Sunbeam Foodsaver though I would've liked the bigger unit, we got this one for a steal.

This is taken from a site so i go by this sometimes when i got a catch and store it. but like brett said, those vacuum sealers do work wonders! :D

"Aquaculture Fish ( salmon, trout ) 4 days

Wild Fish (blue eye, flathead) 2-3 days

Crustaceans (crabs, lobster) 2-3 days

Molluscs (squid, calamari) 2-3 days"
PLENTY!! of FISH!! in the SEA!! but so little TIME!!!

decades.....no bull. My uncle used to work in USS Midway which was commissioned 1945. By the end of the Vietnam war (1975) they cleaned up the freezers inside out and found many packets of vacuum packed fish dated 1946 - seal intact. As usual, soldiers being battle hardened, they thawed the fish and tried them out of curiousity. He said they did not notice a difference in taste and quality. The vacuum packing made it last 3 decades. If the packets were not found, they could have lasted at least until 1992 when the carrier was finally decommissioned.

The longest I kept fish in my freezer was a little over a year - vacuum packed. (actually, I forgot about it until I dug under the pile). Never lost the taste and quality.

I buy steak by bulk and I vac pack them in slices of 2. 4 months later, I still have about 4 slices left in the freezer - vac packed. Cooked 2 the other week and they tasted like the first day I bought them.

The fish will stay fresh in Vac packaging for as long as the seal stays intact.
OF ALL THE THINGS I LOST, I MISS MY MIND THE MOST.
