How to cook Pike
So my brother got a call to go out fishing on a boat last night...lucky bastard...anyway, he sent me a picture at like 2 in the morning of a decent sized Pike he just caught, I am just curious as to how we should go about cooking it, I know a lot of people say don't bother but him and I have a rule and that is if it's legal size and we've never tried it we will at least give it a go once, so any recipes would be much appreciated!

They need to be crumbed or floured or they are a bit dry, as long as you eat them fresh they are good

Sounds a bit like salmons. A lot of people don't like eating them but if bled and eaten fresh they aren't too bad at allfishpod wrote:They need to be crumbed or floured or they are a bit dry, as long as you eat them fresh they are good

Best method I know, is cut your pike into 50mm long cutlets, put an 8/0 gamakatsu occy circle through the back. Piff it over the side, wait for a gummy to hook up. Clean and cook your gummy in the normal way.

I agree they are quite OK fresh - I just fillet them and egg and bread crumb them leave them in the fridge for the egg to set for about an hourfishpod wrote:They need to be crumbed or floured or they are a bit dry, as long as you eat them fresh they are good
then shallow fry them
this also works but I catch more gummies on banana prawnCarlG wrote:Best method I know, is cut your pike into 50mm long cutlets, put an 8/0 gamakatsu occy circle through the back. Piff it over the side, wait for a gummy to hook up. Clean and cook your gummy in the normal way.

Re: How to cook Pike
Ok so we tried the pike (just a light dusting in flour/pepper/salt) and safe to say we weren't a fan.

Re: How to cook Pike
I would probably have used it in a wet dish, such as a fish curry, pie or casserole etc. Something that will keep/add moisture to the flesh and add flavour.
Or as Carl said.. turn it into something better. :water:

I reckon if you batter them they would be ok, that would keep the moisture in. IMO they are pretty bland, but eatable.

Re: How to cook Pike
1. Boil water.
2. Add pike fillets
3. Add a decent sized rock
4. Once cooked, throw away the pike fillets and eat the rock
