After 25 years working in fish and chip shops, I am VERY suspicious of deals involving cheap fish.

Kingsbury fish and chips had very cheap whiting ($6 for a huge fillet), not totally convinced it was whiting because it'd need to have come from a fat 50cm plus fish but it tasted pretty bloody good. They were that typical run down looking shop run by an Asian family with chiko roll posters and fish species charts that looked like they hadn't been replaced since the 90s. Did great F&Cs though.

Sounds like you were sold Hake.

Where I am working now is selling a King George Whiting fillet for $8.50 each......

Could be, I'll have to find some hake and see if it tastes the same. They get huge whiting in South Australia so it could just be from there too.

Do they sell sand whiting in fish and chip shops as opposed to KGW?

How do you go about ballooning a bait out with all the jetskiers that infest that part of the bay?

To the real old blokes, how about a trays worth of chips (three pence) or a zacs worth (sixpence). Can,t remember fish cost but it was only Flake or Couta anyway and nobody knew the difference anyway.
Surely I,m not the only one out there who can remember these terms?
