I didn't pay attention to the "softness" of the mouth, and i am not sure what they class as a small hook, but i caught it on a 5/0 with half a pilchard.

Although this quote does match:

so named because of the slime that covers their bodies

The thing was slimy as hell....

Yup warehou, I concur. That band is pretty distinctive.
Also the Black banded trevally or Blackbanded amberjack are not found in our waters

It is a baby snotty, trawlers catch large quantities in Bass Strait along the continental shelf. They grow to 2-3kg but mostly are about 1kg.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

This is a snotty I got out front of Barwon earlier this year. The black patches aren’t as pronounced but looks the same.

Small snotty.
Great on the plate.
Get heaps of them out from flinders and seal rocks
Real firm white flesh and very clean tasting.
They go great on light gear

It does indeed look like Seriolina nigrofasciata - Black banded trevally or Blackbanded amberjack
Congratulations, rare catch.
Sounds like it went hard, like all the Seriolina/ Seriola's do
Blackbanded Amberjack? Aren't amberjacks like HUGE?
