Skate ID

Post by 4liters » Sun May 08, 2016 8:06 am

Caught this in 37m off Port Fairy. I have no idea if we get many different species of them or it's just a Melbourne Skate but I'm always curious when I catch something new. It fought a bit harder than I thought a skate would, went on several slow but powerful runs that had me thinking it might have been a 7 gill shark.

I am more concerned that you were in 37 meters off Port Fairy in a kayak, very dangerous position you put yourself in there but the choice is yours.
Did you manage to catch anything else?

Looks like some species of stingray, since I can see what looks like a barb on the tail in the second picture.

Doesn't look like a Whiteley's Skate (which I think is what people call a "Melbourne Skate") - not enough spines and 'knobbles' along the back.

Cheers,

Mike.

It definitely wasn't a stingray, the 'barb' is just one of the fins seen from above. I thought the Meblourne Skates were a darker colour.

Not dangerous at all if you take precautions. A pike and a ******* gannet were the only other things I caught.
