All fish?...any fish???...or just certain ones!
I know this might sound really naive, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.
If you are offshore fishing, or even saltwater fishing in general, such as beaches, reefs, 2m deep water, or 200m deep water, are there certain types of fish which you cannot/do NOT eat?? Particularly around Victorian saltwaters? (and particularly reef fish)
I want to start up a thread which will list all saltwater fish in at least Victoria to begin with (maybe extend to Australia eventually) according to taste/edibility, so look out for the thread! :notworthy:
Cheers!

Toadfish and puffers are poisonous and will kill you
Gurnards and scorpion cod have venomous spines which need a lot of care and some people simply don't keep them
Some sharks like great whites and nurse sharks, as well as blue gropers (not sure if you get them in Vic) are protected species and you shouldn't target them at all
There's a bunch of stuff that won't kill you but tastes like **** so you wouldn't keep them except for bait

The problem is taste is subjective. There is a site I think called goodfish badfish which lists everything you have mentioned. For instance some people really enjoy Australian Salmon while I don't really rate it etc.Davidsch1 wrote:Yeah, and those bad tasting ones are ones that I want to find out about too!4liters wrote: There's a bunch of stuff that won't kill you but tastes like sh*t so you wouldn't keep them except for bait

Still a good topic though and I will happily contribute!

I agree about subjectivity and I am open to everyone's opinion. Where there is variance in opinion, I will list the rating based on average. So if someone rates salmon as really good, such as 7/10 rating, but you rate them as 1/10, then I would record 4/10 rating as an average, or if a third person rates it as a 2/10, then the average will be cumulative, etc - average of 7/10, 2/10, and 1/10 is 3/10

Needs a rating out of 10 for how fun they are on light gear too.

I caught 4 big zebra fish the other day from Martha cove! They were actually quite nice to eat. Not bad at all :thumbsup:Bar002811 wrote:I think 4 litres means by sh***t reef fish to eat is small parrot fish dusky morwong zebra fish and so on
