Looks like a young gurnard or a similar species, although I may be incorrect!

You don't know what it is and you touch it ? those things have serious spikes behind the gills and down the back.

I assume it would be painful if you got spiked, I've caught them in reefy areas around the bay and around the warmies in williamstown.

I always use fish grip pliers or just cut the line with these things.

Be careful handling unknown fish and don't use your bare hands if it looks dodgy.

Use to see them all the time diving, nainly on night dives. Cobblers we use to call em.

Take your pick. You'll know all about it when he gets you with any one of his spines :rofl:

Brett is correct, it's a Soldier fish. The spines are painful, be careful handling the fish..

Technically known around the world as scorpion fish which also are related to gurnards. Whatever it is, don't handle these fish bare handed.
I've accidentally caught some in a bait trap... let me tell you it wasn't an easy quick task getting these buggers out with all their spines!

Was caught at tooradin which surprised me a little
