The issue people have is the fact that he was not aware of what it was...therefore uncertain as to applicable size limits etc. I'm sure he won't make the same mistake again!

I agree with Jim.
By the way I don't agree with mindless killing of living things, but its funny (sad) how people freak out if a fish,spider or bunny etc gets killed yet we go and pay to kill babies in the mothers womb & most people don't object. The world is seriously messed up.

Caught plenty while holidaying in Tassie last year ... kept a few for eating and never again ... Crusty Pizza would have been a better option

I caught a Crusty Pizza fish in the Yarra once ... released unharmed.

If it was a whole bucket of unidentified fish kept, I'd be concerned, but one specimen is hardly an ecological disaster, given that there are no threatened species in this size range in PPB (are there?).

Not so much the ecological impact, but if fisheries catch you with a protected species, or undersize individual of a certain species, then you are gonna cop it..which is why a lot of the comments are valid. If you don't know, chuck it back.
