What's big, grey and likes to follow 2.5inch zman grubs?

Post by Basti » Thu Oct 30, 2014 7:44 pm

I was at Mornington round 4pm today, throwing a little plastic at some red mullet. was talking to the fisho next to me and just rolling the grub at med pace when i looked down at my lure and something following right behind. Almost filled my pants. beastie turned away once the lure started rising to the jetty

from what i saw, it was 60cm+ grey coloured, and solid looking. Definitely wasnt coloured like a sambo (lighter and no salmon i've see was that big), was too deep in the body for couta (of which there were plenty btw).

Please don't tell me it was something starting with M.

Haha, you know, I think it might be something even more painful than something starting with an M....

My guess is a pike or snook! Pretty common in the area your in and 60cm would fit the size. Pike are more stocky in the body and snook are more elongated.
edit: my 2nd guess is dusky morwong, not uncommon in the same area.
When I got time,
I wet a line cos Im a junkie,
been fishin since a kid,
I like it cos it numbs me..

main pier, on the inside. I got a few strikes, and one actual take. water was clear enough to see the school at times.

As shaz said it was most likely a dusky morwong.

I think it would be highly unlikely that it would be a kingy. From what i know they're very aggressive, don't think they would stalk a lure, more just smash it..
My guess would be a pike, i've heard they have been around as of late..

Edit: oops just saw that you confirmed it was probably a Morwong, my bad :)
