I’ll probably grill it just so I can get an accurate gage of how it tastes. Maybe pan fry, haven’t decided.Lightningx wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 3:37 pmHow are you planning on cooking it?Irishfisherman wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 2:48 pmWell, just filleted it’s and I’m very impressed with the amount of meat. Smells delicious too, sort of like crab, the fillets look a bit messy because I don’t like washing them in fresh water. I’ll give an update of how it tastes later tonight in case anyone’s interested.

I’m just happy IF didn’t identify a fish correctly
There is always more to learn , fish to catch , places to see and friends to make.

Re: Great session! Unidentified fish.
Well, I just grilled and ate the beaked salmon along with a red mullet and I’m surprised and pleased to say that the beaked salmon was actually better, more flavour, and a firmer texture. The beaked salmon had a distinct taste sort of like crab and sort of like the smell of the ocean, absolutely beautiful, I left the skin on and that was also really good. I definitely think it outclassed the red mullet by a significant margin and red mullet are one of my favourites. Won’t hesitate to spear one if I ever encounter another in the future, doubt that’ll be any time soon though.

Technically, assuming you were wading under 2m of water at the low tide mark, you would have been breaking the law by collecting the molluscs.Irishfisherman wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 12:32 amHad a wading session tonight ... 4 scallops .... some mussels

Just for future reference....You can't collect any mollusc in waters less than 2m deep (the intertidal zone) in Port Phillip Bay. Click here for more information on Port Phillip Bay's intertidal zone.
You can't collect single shelled molluscs in waters less than 2m deep (the intertidal zone) in all Victorian waters, including Port Phillip Bay. Click here for more information on the intertidal zone.
You can't collect any molluscs in Marine National Parks and Sanctuaries. Click here for more information on Marine National Parks and Sanctuaries.
Btw, thanks for the info on the beaked salmon. Have never even heard of it, now I know I'll keep it if I ever catch one over the "size limit".
