Just one of those days when you catch everything except what you're after. You'll get 'em next time!

Nice mixed bag you got there.

I'd love to get a fire going on the beach, do the popo or whoever give you grief at all at that spot, or is it too far from civilization for them to spot it?

Broomy tells them he's conducting an experiment on what fish come towards a fire.
The results are in :- Only undesirables come towards a fire (in saltwater).
Maybe I should be a scientist. Myself & FC have similar creative minds.
Well done Prof Pat, always a great read & photos.

Cheers

skronkman wrote:That cod you caught. Did it have an eel like tail? It looks kinda like a ling to me given its colour and size. If so, it's certainly not undesirable on the plate as ling is one of the best eating fish in the bay.

Upon further investigation it seems that southern rock cod can get to 50cm! I've caught hundreds of them in WP and nothing over about 25cm and always grey in colour, but I'm sure you know your fish species better than my guess from the photo.

Looks like a fun night.
Thanks mate, yep southern rock cod aka bait-guzzling pains in the ass

Thanks mate. I've lit a fire pretty much every time I've been gummy fishing in Westernport, and have only been told off once by a ranger at Balnarring (he just said to put it out). This spot was a bit of a walk so we were never gonna get in trouble there, but I used to light them at the more popular spots like Merricks main beach, Shoreham main beach etc and always got away with it.

Haha funny you say that Gra - I've had people tell me that a fire on the beach will scare away more timid fish (i.e. gummies). Maybe they're right.
