Interesting trip to WP
I went back to my old stomping grounds in Westernport with a couple of pals over the weekend to try and catch a gummy. We arrived at one of my favourite beaches an hour or so before dark:
And started flicking around various placcies to see if we could snag some fresh bait. These little pests were hitting everything:
Which Lando seemed to think was pretty funny:
Lara finally got the ball rolling with this bait-sized grass whiting:
These little guys are surprisingly willing to hit a lure, and make great baits. The sun had started to set by this stage:
And Luna looked a little exasperated by our lack of fish:
Until my mate Ash tied on a monster myki (pretty interesting choice I thought), which was belted second cast. I called it for a nice pinky, but we were pleasantly surprised to see this beaut pop up:
A big KGW, and his first on a lure – ripper!
He had a few more hits on the monster myki so I decided to tie one one too, and just after the sun went down my rod buckled over. I was hoping for a big KGW too, and I wasn’t disappointed:
I guess ting’ like monster mykis – who knew?
By this stage it was dark and the temperature was plummeting, so we lit a fire:
And whipped out the gummy gear. We hadn’t caught much bait, but luckily I’d brought a frozen tuna along just in case:
It was constant action right from the beginning. We caught just about every undesirable in the bay including cod:
Draughtboard sharks:
Small banjo’s:
Big banjo’s:
Small skate:
Big skate:
A monster toad:
A cat shark:
A cute stingaree:
And a SHITLOAD of couta (which meant heaps of fresh bait, but also heaps of goddam shredded leaders):
But no gummies. Dang! We were bitten off a couple of times by what I’m certain were big gillers, but we didn’t have any gummy-like runs. Ah well, I’d take a big KGW on a placcie over a gummy any day.
Cheers!

Nice little adventure mate. I dont think anyone would be upset with catching KGW's on plastics!
Beautiful pooches by the way.

Lol @ "every undesirable in the bay" - i'm sure there was a lot of excitement each time the rod went off, followed by varying levels of disappointment when whatever undesirable on the line was eyed off. Great photos as always - looked like it was a ripper of a night

Re: Interesting trip to WP
That cod you caught. Did it have an eel like tail? It looks kinda like a ling to me given its colour and size. If so, it's certainly not undesirable on the plate as ling is one of the best eating fish in the bay.
Upon further investigation it seems that southern rock cod can get to 50cm! I've caught hundreds of them in WP and nothing over about 25cm and always grey in colour, but I'm sure you know your fish species better than my guess from the photo.
Looks like a fun night.
