Computers?

Post by abzz » Sat Oct 01, 2016 1:16 am

Hi guys, I'm thinking of getting a desktop computer and monitor setup very soon and need some advice on what specs/hardware etc I should be running, but nothing too over the top.
Will be used for video downloading, video editing, video streaming and all other general stuff too.
Is it worth getting new or would second-hand be good enough?
Thanks in advance

High end i5 cpu or ideally i7 mid range cpu
16 gig memory ( video editing is memory intensive )
150 gig SSD and 2 to 4 TB plater HDD for storage
1000 to 1200 watt watt power supply
Mid to high range graphics card
Mid range mother board
DVD drive or two if your into copying dvd's

All software to suit what your doing.

This set up will make video editing fast and not painfully slow.

I've built over 20 systems ( gaming and office ) and seen the problems with under powered computers built on the cheap.

LOL @ the above post. That's a bit overspeced for a regular user.

If by video editing you mean uploading videos from your iPhone or Camera and then cutting bits out of it, or adding sounds etc., or converting formats - a 1GB Video Card is sufficient. Unless you are a hardcore Photoshopper or plan to use 3D design software.

Something like this would be more than sufficient. Alternatively, for more storage, tell them to add an additional hard-disk.

The good thing about 2nd hand PCs like this is that they have usually been pulled out of corporate environments, sold at auctions and refurbished before being resold. They also come with Windows licencing and sometimes even Office. There is usually a 3 month warranty on them too, but VERY rarely do PCs simply break. Especially DELL or HP ones.

They can also hook you up with a 2nd hard screen, or just buy a brand new 27" LG for $300.

I was self employed for 10 years buying and selling 2nd hand computers just like this one. In fact I'm using a used DELL i3 PC I purchased in 2010 for $120. I increased the RAM to 8GB and disk space to 4TB + put Office 2016 (via Office365) on it.
(BTW I almost never turn off my computers, so this one has been running 24/7 for 6 years)

Build your own - hundreds of $$ cheaper than those in eBay or shops. Think about the $$$ to be saved which you can use to buy reels :-) www.pccasegear.com.au . I just built a gaming PC for my son. High end graphics card, big RAM, 2TB HDD, Bluray RW drive, Windows OS for under $1500. Second hand 27 inch monitor for $120 off ebay + $5 HDMI cable completed the setup

Thanks guys alot of info there to work with.
Funny enough I used to build computers for a living (about 40-70 PC's a day) but I know nothing about software/installation or hardware that's required for specific applications LOL.

I just built a new Pc a week or so ago;

i7-6700k
8g GTX 1070
16gb Ram
M2 SSD

Its super quick, and you could pretty easily build it for under 2k

Some eBay shops will have an actual shop front too.

Here are some you can try:

1477 Centre Rd, Clayton VIC 3168
pc-tek.com.au

8/26-28 Roberna St, Moorabbin VIC 3189
smartcom.com.au

111/45 Gilby Rd, Mount Waverley VIC 3149
budgetpc.com.au

I've bought PCs and servers off all of them without issues to date.
