Fresh mullet live and frozen

Post by Huxx9 » Fri Jun 30, 2017 6:47 pm

Just wondering a bit about mullet as bait as I'm new to this fishing stuff..
When catching smaller mullet to use as bait is there a size limit and or bag limit etc
Also keen to know if you can freeze it yourself and if so is there a special method to it
If you can freeze is it best to freeze as whole or get small fillets from the fish

Thanks in advance

size and bag limits apply to all fish taken whether for the table or as bait

Generally bait fish is best frozen whole, stays firmer

Size limits are the same weather your keeping fish for bait or food. Download the vic recreational fishing app and all the info you need is in there.

If your keeping fish for bait put them straight into an ice slurry then straight in the freezer when you get home. When you need to use them take them out the night before and sprinkle them with sea salt / rock salt to harden them up a bit so they don't turn into mush.

Frozen mullet catch dumb fish or competitive fish in a school

If you happen to cast that dead mullet into a competitive school of big fellas, then its game on.

But if you're off the school - then the residents arent likely to eat freezer burned mullet
