baiting

Hi all just throwing it out there if anyone has any special method of baiting Pilchard on to hooks so they don't fly off when casting?

Also heard putting them in a container full of salt for a couple nights to draw the moisture out also makes them like rubber like so they're easier to hook on and stays on the hook longer?

Yeah bud, put your hook just under the backbone and feed it through to the eye and the most important part is tying a couple of half hitches round the tail, or just youtibe it and you will get all the variables

You could try using bait elastic too.

I wouldn't be doing anything to draw the moisture out. You want that stuff leaking out into the water, not your fridge.

my advice would be to start with good pillies

I pick mine up from the fish market in spring vale they are always better than going to the bait freezer

I fish them on a two hook rig and if Im really trying to get them out a distance I use a bait clip on the sinker and clip the rig to streamline it. Having a smooth casting action will help as well.

Bait mate elastic or half hitches will help the pillie from flying off.

Bait mate I always have some with me either on the boat or in the surf. If you pick up crap pillies that when defrosted are soft bait mate whipped around the tail hold it on the hook long enough to get a bite
