Yes smoothound look extremely similar to gummies.

I found crabs gummies stomach and have used them for bait every since.

We have missed on a gummy once in 40 plus trips so they clearly work.

How you rig the crabs for gummies frozen pod?
The sheer amount of crabs I have pulled out of gummies over the years is ridiculous. They love em.

More importantly, how do you go about getting these crabs for bait? Traps? A pump?

Ive caught fish with small sandcrabs in them plenty of times. I also go out to catch my 30 sand crabs regularly for me to eat. Ive tried using them as bait where ive caught snapper and gummies which had eaten them for no joy. Ive never liked crab as a bait. But as tucker you cant beat them

Thats the bit I'm not sure if you can do here. We used to use 30cm lengths of guttering and push them half in the mud at a 45 degree angle, leave it for a couple of days and then go back at low tide. I used to live on the Thames and the amount of crap in that river, well they didnt mind a few bits of pipe. Anyone know if its ok here?

Similar..it was old car tyres in the Tyne..half buried, perfect hiding place for them.
Other than that, look under rocks and ledges near the high tide mark, they tend to hide up as far as they can to avoid predation during their shedding phase.
