Sabiki rigs good for landbased/piers?
Being a total newbie to fishing and after a few doughnuts chasing Pinkies/Snapper in freezing cold/rain... I thought I should learn the arts with something simpler first, baitfish!
So I did some quick research and got a few Sabiki Rigs, thinking of heading to a pier (Kerferd, Lagoon, Williamstown & Altona are closest to me), burley up with some tuna oil + bread crumbs and chuck the Sabiki down..
Any tips?
I noticed (from my doughnut sessions!) there's a ton of tiny schoolfish that hang around the pier/shores, not sure what they are.. is it possible to hook them on the Sabiki and whether they are usable as bait?

Drop a sinker on the bottom of the rig walk lift drop repeat! Looks like a small school of tiny fish should clean up good luck

You mean those tiny school fish are usable? I saw millions of them on my last outing at Kerferd.BIG GAV wrote:Drop a sinker on the bottom of the rig walk lift drop repeat! Looks like a small school of tiny fish should clean up good luck
Are they anchovies or baby sardines?

Nice, thanks!
I wasn't sure what they were or whether they are catchable, I looked on the fisheries limit section but couldn't find any info regarding these tiny baits.
@bowl
Cheers for the tip, I put the warmies on my list of locations to try out next! Figured I have better luck with a Sabiki with 6 hooks than my paternoster with 2 giving me nada for the past few sessions. :D

unless laws have changed over the years.. and may have since my main fishing days.. i understand you can have 4 rods with 2 hooks per line in salt.. 2 rods and one hook fresh(maybe two hooks i'm not sure on fresh)
but as they are baitfish.. it may be legal to lower down a ring net with your berley in it.. let it sit just below the water.. then pull it up once you see a few baitfish hanging about in it???

4 rods two hooks still the same law.. 6 hooks are fine on one rod providing there is no bait on them..

Re: Sabiki rigs good for landbased/piers?
Thanks for the advice!
I bought a few Sabiki Rig packs, sizes 6-12, the 6 has tiny hooks on it, figured if they made such tiny hooks its probably meant for very tiny fish so I got it in case it was legal to catch those tiny bait. I'll give it a try tomorrow.
One rod with Sabiki Rig (no baits on hooks) and another chucking soft plastics or metal lures off the pier, probably Altona or somewhere in Williamstown, go exploring new locations around Melbourne!
