Using squid as bait.

Post by Rod Bender » Fri Apr 03, 2015 4:15 pm

Hi peoples
I am going to attempt to get me a squid or two during our Brighton meet. From what I have heard it may require some effort as the squidding there has been slow. Anyway, if I am successful I will then want to use them as bait on the day. So how do you do it? Just cut the main body up into chunks...and what size roughly on what size hooks? Whack the tentacle thingies on a hook! :) Of course it would depend on what fish you would be chasing and where. So in regards to this I would have to say whatever species would be on offer at Brighton.
Thanks in advance.

Small hooks for whiting, not much bait as they have small mouths, but I'd go a 3/0 or bigger and put a big chunk on it and launch it deep as possible in hopes of a gummy.. I dunno what's out at Brighton but fresh squid is great bait damn near anywhere
If I'm not fishing, I'd rather be fishing!

Best bet at brighton would be flathead and pinkies depending on where you cast. a size 1/0 (or there abouts) circle and cut the bait to suit the hook. you can use just about any part of the squid but if you want to eat them keep the hood and just use the tentacles, wings and head.

I am with mazman keep the hoods to eat, if I was targeting gummies snapper etc I would use the whole head as a hang bait but at this time of year and being landbased I would just use a kl 1, 0 circle and cut the tentacles wings etc into strips lightly mash it I carry a meat tenderizer for the job. I also put a tentacle on a jig head its the ultimate soft plastic.

Regards to tenderising, I'd just use the butt of my knife to soften it. Using as bait, a strip, cut big enough for the hook you're using, as a hang bait (pinned once through an end) will do. I use circle hooks so hook exposure is very important.. Depending on the size of the squid, you could just use a ring too, again through one end.

Spot on with the ultimate plastic, if you leave enough hanging off the back you can get a bit of movement without losing to many hookups. Best part is you can catch multiple fish on the same tentacle.

I use all of the squid as bait if my kids don't get to the squid first. Tentacles, heads and cut the tube into strips.
