Tackle used in the surf that side of the world .
14 ft rod . Something in the region of a 400/stroke 5
Eg Stroke 1 would be good for pinkies etc
Stroke 2 salmon to pinkies to med taylor
Stroke 3 taylor of 3 to 5 kg.mullaway my biggest on a stroke 3 was 27 kg
Stroke 4 and 5 and even 6/7 you going for bronzies great whites etc
Reels eg trinidad 40
Line 0.55.
Sinker 8 to 10 oz
2 x 8 o hooks
Steal trace
Slider
Bait live a 1 to 2 kg taylor
Dead bait could be a kingfish head with squid and pillchards tied together.
Thats it. The younger fish 10 kg class seem to be more agro.Big fish are lazy.
I have caught plenty that side.Thats all i targeted .Around Cape Town that is.
Best times that side November to March.
Live bait mullet and taylor are best. The bigger the better.A 2 kg live taylor is almost a must 20 kg plus.
Sliders do help its not a must.

In south Africa maybe, in Victoria you need to scale down to 1/4 of all your recommendations.

My mate is from south Africa, he used the same huge baits and tackle he use over there, he caught nothing until he was educated on the rigs used in Victoria, he now catches as many fish as I do, location location location as they say...

i was wondering when you were going to post loll. between you and axleman ive seen some brutes (pics only)
Ha. Yeah, you would have seen that pic elsewhere.

Axeman's got the Yarra record so far I think, 1.46 metres on plastics in a yak.
Nah g money has the yarrabyrnong record at 1.47. Benny is next best at 1.42m. Axle isn't too far behind I think high 1.3's

One day... Haha
Was Benny's from a while ago? There were some stonking fish landed during that time

Wow! There are Jews half that size in the Yarra for sure. Doubt they'd be that big though, but who would know! Western Sth Oz coast would prob be your best chance I'd be thinking...

That is a true monster.
I've always wondered when the last time a beast (30kg+) was pulled out of the Yarra or Barwon for that matter ;-)

Due to drought the spawning hasn't been great over the last decade or two, and I'm sure that's had a big impact. They would be there, but minimal numbers and extremely smart fish. There seems to be healthy numbers at present in the 70-110cm range, which would be a result of good spawning from when the last drought broke. Big Jews are lazy, and seem to feed less frequently because of this. I'm a strong believer that big baits = big jews. I've used 40cm livies before, but how many other jewie fishos actually use big baits like that or bigger round here? Gotta be in it to win it!

I'll fess up...that pic was photoshopped for a joke on another forum. The fish was actually caught in Yalata, S.A.. ;-)

The gear used was a 12' Nitro Assassin, Abu 7000 reel, 80lb braid, squid strip bait.
