He does look very small and insignificant in that photo. No doubt he and others who take their yaks out that far take all precautions.purple5ive wrote:man you got some balls going there in a yak on your own.

P.S. Now I know why you would chuck up

Re: Cape Woolamai 11/2
It was a bit risky without the EPIRB and flares (hopefully will be remedied before Portland 2: Electric Boogaloo next week), but I always have a buoyant bilge pump in case it springs a leak. The paddle has a leash so if I do fall out I'm still connected to the yak and can climb back in. I've got a whistle in the PFD and a floating torch for getting someone's attention in an emergency. There was plenty of boat traffic so I wasn't completely on my own out there.
I feel the most important thing is checking the weather, having a fast yak and being fit enough to get out in a hurry if the weather changes because the biggest hazards out there are mostly weather related.

dont forget you also need a spare paddle if heading out wide ( more that 2 nm or 3.7 km off shore )4liters wrote:It was a bit risky without the EPIRB and flares (hopefully will be remedied before Portland 2: Electric Boogaloo next week), but I always have a buoyant bilge pump in case it springs a leak. Re: Cape Woolamai 11/2
Probably should get one this week, any particular paddle that people seem to favour?

Re: Cape Woolamai 11/2
I just have a cheap 2 piece paddle as it's easy to stow and really it's only a back up if my normal paddle fails ( and it's requirement as mandatory safety gear that must be carried off shore )4liters wrote:Probably should get one this week, any particular paddle that people seem to favour?

Re: Cape Woolamai 11/2
How do you store it? I've been looking at telescopic ones but I can imagine they would be a very slow paddle back with only one blade, so not much better than a broken paddle.cheaterparts wrote:I just have a cheap 2 piece paddle as it's easy to stow and really it's only a back up if my normal paddle fails ( and it's requirement as mandatory safety gear that must be carried off shore )4liters wrote:Probably should get one this week, any particular paddle that people seem to favour?

Re: Cape Woolamai 11/2
Mate thats a good report. Those gurnard are nasty things, i use a t bar disgorger or a knife to cut them off if I cant see the hook. That place must produce at some point, reckon the squid under a float is worth a try.
Cast, catch and put it back
