Red point Phillip island

Me and my mate have fished this spot a bunch of times but am not sure when the conditions are best there. We went last week and when we arrived the water was rougher than what we expected. Fishing from the point the wind was coming from our right and every time we cast, there was heavy weed. We upgraded our sinker size and yet it wouldn't sit and would get dragged around and weed on our lines within minutes.
We only ended up catching a lot of unwanted species including Rays, swell sharks, port jacksons and a few rock cods. I had a small rod out for whiting as well but kept catching these small eel like creatures.
Does anyone know what wind direction is best for this spot? We were thinking maybe a south/southwest wind?

Red point is a reasonably protected mark. A big E or SE would make it tough but most other directions are ok. Its only a narrow channel there so even a northerly doesn't build up too big a swell. One of the few spots you can fish in a southerly.
If you are having problems holding bottom there get some breakout leads from tackleworld, never had problems holding there when using those.
