I fish that spot pretty consistently and have no idea.

kelpie aka marble fish, see them all the time spearfishing but rare to catch

It is one of two species: the marble fish (Aplodactylus arctidens) or the rock cale (Aplodactylus lophodon). Both are found throughout southern Australian waters and feed predominantly on weed and algae, so are rarely caught on rod and reel. The only morphological differences between the two are the size of the scales and the presence of vomerine teeth, so it would be imposisble to make a 100% positive ID. But based on the colouring I'd say it's a rock cale

Great response broomstick I have the southern fish id book but looking at the picture sometimes is confusing I sometimes use the Melb museum website for fish id
