TEN MILLION FISH AND BETTER FACILITIES FOR VICTORIAN ANGLERS
A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will make Victoria the fishing capital of Australia, delivering a massive boost to fish stocking across the state and investing in better facilities for recreational anglers.
Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford today joined Labor Candidate for Ripon Sarah De Santis and keen anglers in Ararat to outline Labor’s plans to make it easier for Victorian families to get out on the water – opening up new fishing spots, rehabilitating fish habitats and investing in programs to get more kids into fishing.
Four years ago, Labor promised to grow fishing participation to one million anglers by 2020 – we’re well on the way to achieving that goal, but there’s still more to do.
Under a re-elected Labor Government, fish stocking will grow to 10 million fish per year by 2022, driving growth in fishing participation and helping every Victorian angler to have a good day out on the water.
This comes on top of the $7 million the Andrews Labor Government has already committed to a new native fish hatchery in Shepparton.
Labor will open up new fishing spots across the state, allowing anglers to use non-powered boats such as kayaks and small craft with electric motors on Tullaroop, Lauriston, Hepburn, Upper Coliban and Malmsbury reservoirs.
Hundreds of kilometres of crown land river frontages covered by grazing licenses will also be opened up for fishing and camping.
There’ll be better facilities at some of Victoria’s favourite coastal fishing spots, with Labor investing in a $600,000 fish cleaning table construction blitz around Port Phillip Bay and Corio Bay.
A new Fishing for All program will be introduced to get more people into fishing and Labor will invest a further $200,000 in the highly successful Vic Fish Kids program.
And for those who want to take their love of fishing from the ramp to the road, VicRoads will offer a new range of recreational fishing designed licence plates for cars, introduced as part of the range of custom plates
Quotes attributable to Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford “Whether you fish on the coast, on our stunning bays and inlets or in pristine freshwater lakes and rivers – only Labor will deliver for recreational anglers.”
“Four years ago Labor promised a massive boost to recreational fishing in Victoria through Target One Million – we’ve delivered that, but there’s still more to do.”
Quotes attributable to Labor Candidate for Ripon Sarah De Santis
“This is great for local anglers and for fishing tourism – it’ll mean more fish, better facilities and more tourism across regional Victoria including right here across the Grampians, Loddon and the Wimmera.”
“Labor will make it easier for Western Victorian families to get out on the water and catch a fish, increasing fish stocks across our favourite waterways and opening up new fishing spots across the state.”
