New Jetty At Yarriambiack Creek A Boost For Anglers

Freshwater anglers casting a line into the Yarriambiack Creek Weir Pool in Warracknabeal now have a new jetty funded through recreational fishing licence fees.

Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford said the 13.5 metre long jetty will help get more families fishing, more often, which is at the heart of the Andrews Labor Government’s Target One Million plan.

Target One Million is investing a record $46 million into recreational fishing, including $9 million from the sale of fishing licence fees, to increase participation to one million anglers by 2020.

The new 3.3 metre-wide jetty is situated in front of the Warracknabeal Angling Club, which managed the project, and has been custom built for anglers and fishing boats.

It features three seats, two bait tables and solar lighting, along with fenders and cleats so boats can tie up safely.

The Large Grants program funds projects worth between $5,000 and $100,000 and opened last month. Applications for the current 2017/18 round close on 28 February 2018.

Projects are funded in four categories:

Fisheries sustainability and habitat improvement
Fishing access and facilities
Fisheries related education, information and training
Recreational fisheries research.
Previously funded projects have included fish cleaning tables, signage, stiles over fences to improve access along riverbanks, fishing platforms and jetties, and re-snagging to improve fish habitat in rivers and lakes.

The Program is open to fishing clubs, community groups, incorporated bodies, and government and statutory bodies.

Small grants of up to $5,000 are available year round. For more information, or to apply online, visit vfa.vic.gov.au/fishinggrants

Quotes attributable to Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford

“The new jetty will help club members and the general public make the most of the waterway, which has been stocked with nearly 25,000 golden perch fingerlings since 2015.”

“This licence-funded project complements our Target One Million plan for recreational fishing, which aims to get more people fishing, more often by boosting participation to one million anglers by 2020.”
