Two men and a woman have been arrested and had their van and fishing equipment seized for allegedly catching 61 fish with an illegal net at Lake Tyers last Monday night.
After allegedly setting a 22.5m mesh net under Toorloo Arm Bridge on the Princess Highway, the trio were intercepted by Fisheries Officers as they arrived home in Lakes Entrance.
A short time later, Officers retrieved the 22.5m mesh net from under the bridge that had allegedly caught 48 bream, 2 luderick and 11 mullet in the short time it had been set.
Their van was seized along with the mesh net and the three offenders will be charged with offences under the Fisheries and Crimes Act and summoned to appear in the Bairnsdale Magistrates Court.

There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

48 bream and I bet they were undersized as well. They must have been watching them so it's probably not the first time they have done it.

Saw a photo of this, almost all the bream were undersized. Who knows how long these grubs have been doing it for.

And just a few weeks later in the season they may have netted 48 big bream in that area, which would have been even worse. Why do people do this sort of thing? Do bream even fetch a decent price at the market?

Scum bags! They should have the book thrown at them, but I bet they will only get a slap on the wrists. If I were to have out of date flares or similar bet I'd get a fine almost as bad as these scum. The justice system is a joke.

There is a trend for certain people from Melbourne area, coming to Gippsland and catching large quantities of seafood. I am sure they are not for personal use. I think they are being sold or bartered to the restaurant trade and other small outlets.bilby wrote:And just a few weeks later in the season they may have netted 48 big bream in that area, which would have been even worse. The grubs leave their rubbish all over the ground as well.

Been happening for years. Harsher penalties are probably required as these people are well aware that what they are doing is wrong.
