58cm King George whiting in Port Phillip Bay

Post by fishingvic » Mon Feb 06, 2017 8:40 pm

A 58cm King George whiting caught near Swan Island in Port Phillip Bay has been aged at 9 years old, born in the winter of 2007.
A King George whiting of this age is very unusual in Victorian waters.
Most fish of this size and age have already migrated to spawning grounds, thought to be off far western Victoria and into south-east South Australia.
The whiting weighed 1.3kg and was caught in November 2016 by Russell Shipley, who is a volunteer angler diarist helping fisheries scientists monitor fish stocks by recording his catch data and time spent fishing.
The Angler Diary Program is supported by recreational fishing licence fees.

Cracker of a fish but is that statement true? My understanding is that they enter PPB and WP around 6 months after spawning and leave at 3y.o. when they reach sexual maturity.

However fish above 50cm are caught offshore in 20m of water occasionally by snapper fishers, so they can't all head west when they leave the bays, or if they do some must head east again after spawning.

I have heard that there are spawning grounds NE of Stanley (Tas) which may account for King & Flinders Island whoppers as well as those around Burnie.

I wonder if the KGW in far eastern Victoria come from the same spawning grounds as PPB and WP; it is a fair way further for the currents to take them.

Have fisheries released the results of their 2016 recruitment survey yet? I searched their site entering "whiting recruitment" but couldn't see anything current.
Cheers,
Neil
