MILESTONE FISHING GRANT HELPS KEEN ANGLERS IN MALLACOOTA
A milestone 100th fishing club grant was today awarded to the Mallacoota and District Angling Club to boost recreational fishing across our Gippsland Lakes, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Premier Daniel Andrews awarded the grant as part of the Stronger Fishing Clubs Grant Program. The club will use the grant to trial an innovative safe-release cage for estuarine fish caught during ‘catch and release’ tournaments.
The Labor Government is helping Victorian angling clubs improve their facilities, raise their profile and attract new members as part of its Target One Million plan for recreational fishing – aiming to get more people fishing, more often, and grow participation to one million by 2020.
The Labor Government is putting recreational anglers and their families first with a record $46 million investment to deliver a range of improvements including the Stronger Fishing Clubs Grants Program.
Mallacoota is one of Victoria’s most popular venues for fishing tournaments, attracting people from across Australia boosting local tourism and the economy. Recreational fishing across Gippsland is estimated to generate 2,400 jobs and inject $381 million to the economy.
It is hoped the club’s safe-release cage will improve the survival of tournament caught fish and in turn entice new members who favour responsible sport fishing.
A unique design aspect of the cage will enable species like bream to avoid bird predation from above, before exiting the cage from the bottom where deeper water will provide more cover.
Other clubs have used their $2,000 grants to improve club rooms, install new facilities, promote their club at community events and run ‘come and try’ days to provide newcomers with a guided introduction to the pastime.
The Stronger Fishing Clubs grants program will remain open until March 2017 and Victorian clubs operational as at 1 January 2015 can apply online at www.vic.gov.au/strongerfishingclubs
Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews “Clubs are often the first port of call for people new to fishing, so we want to support them in helping to grow participation and get more people fishing.” “This is about putting people first by supporting local communities like Mallacoota – where recreational fishing plays such an important role in creating jobs, boosting tourism and getting people outdoors.”
Quotes attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing “This is great news for the Mallacoota and District Angling Club who are working hard getting more people involved in fishing and enjoying the great outdoors.”
