Too many squid proves costly for angling duo
Two men pleaded guilty in the Frankston Magistrates Court this morning to taking more than twice
the daily bag limit of squid in Port Phillip Bay off Rye in May.
Fisheries Victoria Director of Education and Enforcement, Ian Parks, said the duo had taken 53
squid and one cuttlefish, significantly exceeding the combined bag limit for squid and other
cephalopods of 10 per person per day.
“This is a timely reminder for anglers catching squid for bait or consumption that limits do apply and
will be enforced,” Mr Parks said.
“The 45 year old man from Glen Iris and 56 year old man from Bittern had left the boat ramp in a
suspicious rush without tying down their boat on the trailer.
“Fisheries Officers pursued them and found the pair more than a kilometre from the ramp, where
they had stopped along the roadside to secure their vessel.
“The men initially tried to explain the extra squid in their cooler as defrosting bait they had brought
with them.
“The Glen Iris man admitted he had taken undersized fish on two previous occasions and these
uncharged acts were presented in court.
“He was fined $500 without conviction, had his seized fishing equipment forfeited, was ordered to
surrender his fishing licence and was placed on a three month order that prohibits him from any
form of fishing activity.
“The Bittern man was fined $300 and had his fishing equipment forfeited also.”
Anglers are reminded that the cephalopod bag limit of 10 per day per angler is a combined one
and includes squid, octopus and cuttlefish.
Those fishing in Port Phillip Bay and Western Port over the Melbourne Cup weekend should be
aware that Operation Venture is now in full swing and targeting snapper anglers.
Anyone who sees or suspects illegal fishing can report it by calling Fisheries Victoria’s 24-hour
intelligence reporting line 13FISH (133474).

they should catch more of these people who over bag their limits and keeping under size fishes.
