From the premier's FB page....

For people in the Latrobe Valley, days like this are as tough as they come.

The Hazelwood Power Station and coal mine are closing. One thousand jobs are in the lurch.

While this decision was made by the power station's French owners, our Government will be there for every family this decision affects – and our response has already begun.

From today, a $22 million support package will be available to Hazelwood workers, and a new Latrobe Valley Authority will be set up locally to work with the community.

We stood with the people of the Latrobe Valley during the mine fire. We stand with them today. Under our Labor Government, the Latrobe Valley will not be left behind.

That money will not even touch the sides.
And closing it down will not make an iota of difference to greenhouse emissions as other power stations will ramp up production.
All those people out of work, electricity bills going up for all of us and no change to the environment.

There are no winners here.

So we should keep digging up, exporting and burning fossil fuel until we've done irreparable damage to the environment? Change has to happen. The sooner we transition to renewable energy the better. It's how government manages the transition that is critical.

*edit I've taken this off topic a bit. Hopefully we can get down there and catch a barra before the pondage cools and they go belly up.

If you think the government (libs in particular) are there to act in the best interests of ordinary people, and not just line their mates' pockets or give themselves a cushy consulting job post politics I've got some very bad news for you...

Until they find a base load renewable source you have to keep fossil plants running as spinning reserve. You have to dig so much rare earth up to make pv panels for solar that you have a massive unseen emissions cost, and wind, well wind can only ever be a supplementary power source. Shutting this plant will do nothing for overall emissions, it will just hit us in the pocket and put 700 odd skilled people out of work.
Cast, catch and put it back

wrong on one point mate...there are winners, the snake oil salesman who sell carbon credits, windmills and solar panels to idiotic socialist governments around the world.....they are laughing all the way to the bank. and the alp who will win over a few inner city greens voters. The whole aim of RET and other taxes is to put the coal fired power out of business and its working well.
consequences....thats someone elses problem 5-10 years from now.
we have endless amounts of coal and to not use it as a competitive advantage in this global market to attract industry here is insane. The biggest pushers of the global warming religion are socialists and celebrities...neither of whom think it's enough of a problem to curb their own lifestyles. Hypocrites abound in this green faith.

Hi all you fishos
Has anyone been to hazel wood pondage and fished from a boat. I've got a permit for the end of December and want to know where to go from the ramp..that pondage is a big place and any advice will be appreciated. Also what lures were successful.

Make sure you have a good water thermometer in the boat and cruise around till you find the warmest spot, that's where you thrash the water to foam with lures.
