Good on ya for doing your part to cull some Carp  On another note, they are decent sized fish & would be good sport on light gear.

Great fishing! Where abouts on the Yarra. I hit up Finn's Reserve in Templestowe yesterday but the area was too dangerous to fish.

Gav, the minimum legal length for Macca,s is 35 cm so you can be assured they do grow bigger.
Dartmouth Dam is the major stronghold for this species and the catch limit there is one only,Yarra and Upper Coliban is two, rest of Victoria you must return,if you are lucky enough to find one.
I snagged a goodun at Dartmouth many years ago , very unlucky fish cos it caught itself while we were breaking camp, thought I was snagged.put him back thinking It was out of season only to find out from a ranger that it was still OK. did,t matter.
If I can find the entry in my diary I may have the size and will post it.
Did eat them in those days and sweet fish, more enlightened now and would never keep.
A lovely native fish.

Good to know blue I thought they were protected and had to be returned to the water. Either way I don't keep natives.. Are eels natives?? The spot with the carp was near birrarung park but got the maccas upstream around eltham.

Eels are native but I don't think they're under much pressure, certainly not as much as cod or maccas.
