Have you tried using berley, years ago I did a fair bit of freshwater fishing and did ok on trout carp etc. I have a coffee grinder I use to grind chicken pellets into a powder mix 50/50 with pollard mix with water make dough balls about the size of a tennis ball when they hit the water they break up to a fine particles and really bring the fish in. I also use berley cages instead of the sinker especially in rivers.
