It’s not a solid glass Stubbie or something is it? They make a version now with EVA grips but maybe there was an earlier version with cork.

Unfortunately the JW factory/warehouse burnt down a while back so there isn’t a great deal of ‘official’ info left on those rods, and I think a few collectors shun them a bit because they’ve been seen as selling out a bit with the move towards cheap Chinese imports

These rods are most definitely 1970's if not earlier, I have an original Gutts Butt Ugly Stick here with the same type eyes but this is even older than that, ...barely used and I can see faint seams every inch of the handle that look like they used to be individual corks rather tan the handle being one long cylynder of cork...The tip of the black queen has actually lost its binding, I'll replace it but what I can see shows me it was hand made...I wouldnt be surprised if these wre limited releases for JW

Some collectors are paying over $100 for rods on ebay I have lots of that cost me $10....I'm in it for the collection though, I want my future boat shed/man cave to have these all over the walls...I love the craftsmanship in the early hand crafted Aussie rods, The ones after 1980's are all throwaways...My 40 year old rods still look and work like new, Ive had the mass produced crap fail on me on the first fish

Some pics would be good .

Since you mentioned that the stripper guide is close to the forgrip I think I do remember a short rod back in the late 70s early 80s ......

These 2 pics are of a first gen Black queen with Agate eyes....the only variation of Black Queen I have that has that "Black Queen" sticker and that top cap on the mandle...so I'm guessing these were made for the first yerar that the normal Black Queens were made and then dropped due to not selling well or something...amazing the things you find on gumtree.

When you look at the 1st pic it looks like someone just cut the Ferrell of and made a boat rod

Thats what I think they did at JW...used butt ends to craft boat rods. I'm thinking thats why they went all out with the eye quality and guide wrappings, so they could justify selling a half a rod at the same price as a full sized one, those green fuji eyes were only on expensive rods back in the day....If it were just an old black queen re-purposed after manufacturing the stickers would have different placemenr

I remember as a kid fishing with Jarvis Walker gear always as they were stocked by our local Kmart. It wasn't like now days where there is a BCF or tackle store around the corner wherever you go.

My question is, is JV gear considered crappy or not bad?

These days mostly crappy although every now and then a decent rod or reel comes along. I'm a fan of the JW Intense rods I've got and I've heard a few people say the Tactical reel is better than the current Sienna.
