If you're able to alter your itinerary to travel the Savannah Way to Cairns, there's so much more to see...Lorella Springs is a MUST if you do.

Roper river loaded with Barra! Gotta love corrugated roads to head that way though.

the rosie can be a trap in oct if it rains early.the track in is a disaster with 50mm off rain.

also you need time in there and a boat to get to the mouth. Its full off rockbars...by memory at least 17 off them and the tidal water changes the who concept off were you are

I think the trip is only a month long.

the roper crossing I agree is a great place for land based barra

Cheers bm

Thanks for the advice everyone, it's much appreciated. I should clarify - I'll only have a proper 4WD in Kakadu. I'm driving up in a forrester then my old man is flying up and meeting me in Kakadu and we're hiring a 4WD for about a week.

The itinerary is very flexible, but it looks like Lorella Springs might be a bit iffy in a forrester?

Yeah...good point. If it's wet you'll definitely have trouble.

We went from Darwin to Cairns in May (dry) on dirt bikes. We rode a 60k section that had some rain, to say it was carnage would be an understatement! It took a full day for our 4wd backup to get through it...I shudder to think of a Forrester stuck in that.
