Mission Beach/ Port Douglas report

Post by reillypitts » Mon Jul 18, 2016 10:37 pm

Hi guys, just thought id give a little report on my recent trip to mission beach and port douglas. I got out a few times to fish but mainly did the normal tourist things.

For the first 3 days we stayed at Mission beach. Definately a special part of the world and the fishing wasn't too bad either. Dad and I decided to go to clump point jetty to try and catch whatever we could as we had never fished here before. We started off trying livies which straight away had some interest from some mackeral, however we couldnt seem to hook them. I did end up catching a mackeral but it wasnt what i was expecting to catch one on. I actually caught it on a pilchard tale with 10lb leader, the rig i was trying to catch smaller fish on. So it started off well with my first ever mackeral!

I then caught this crazy looking wolf herring on a soft plastic. The teeth on this thing was something ive never seen before!

We also caught lots of small emporer and moses perch which was a bit of fun.
We then stayed at Port Douglas for the next 7 nights. We decided to head to the marina area. We chucked on some prawn and straight got bites which turned out to be pikey bream. We caught around 8 in one session and 5 in another. These things fight well above there size!

We also did a charter on the Daintree. It was pretty quiet but i did catch my first gt and it was great to be out on the water in a great part of the world.

Great part of the world; I use to live in Port. I use to collect hardie heads from the wharf then go up the estuary and put them out live. We would get some great Mangrove Jacks.

That sounds great mate. Wish we headed up the estuary but didn't get a chance. I have gone up there on a pontoon boat before but didnt get that many fish as i was fairly inexperienced at the time.
