Snapper Trip - Port Lincoln/Whyalla

Post by Vella » Mon Oct 21, 2013 8:36 am

A week away in Whyalla/Port Lincoln with reports coming in prior of decent sized snapper being caught, I thought I was in for chance. My first snapper. :a_goodjob: I knew already how I was going to pose in the picture with my 15kg kilo monster. This was going to be the trip.

A couple of the boat trips we had planned fell through. No stress. We went to the local tackle shop, bought myself a new 2-4kg rod (It’s purple, I’m in love), bought my mate a blue kids rod as a joke and headed to the pier. Had an absolute ball pulling small Tommy Rough’s, using the kids rod, my normal rod and a game rod. :fishing:

We fished off the rocks at Lowley Point. Lesson learnt: don’t wear thongs. Donuts and nearly a broken ankle.

We fished off the little Marina at Lowey Point. Caught a little Shiddy/Shitty?? Something small. The other guy fishing there who caught apparently caught a kingfish off the same spot the previous evening and already had a salmon in his bucket, was thoroughly entertained by my victory run through the carpark! Hey, you have to celebrate the small wins. :lolf:

We fished off a boat around the loading/unloading docks of Whyalla at night. Was cool to see all the mining infrastructure lit up with the lights reflecting on the water. We managed one squid and were catching tiny tiny baby gar in our hands while hanging off the side of the boat. A dolphin followed us in as we were returning and he/she graciously came close enough to boat for me to touch. That was an awesome moment.

Finally we got out on a charter from Port Lincoln. This was it! There was a snapper out there with my name on it.

First spot and I got the first bites and first hook-up courtesy of being the only girl on the boat. As I finished getting the fish in the boat, my mate hooked up and pulled in a Blue Marwong. A decent one too, I took a pic of him with the fish, then looked around for the one I brought in. Gone! The skipper had thrown in over. I told him that I wanted a photo and he looked at me like I was crazy, lol, apparently I had caught a **** fish. A rock cod, I think. Still, I was one of the biggest **** fish I had ever caught. :super:

We spent the day on the gorgeous waters around Port Lincoln and even headed out to open ocean waters. We caught more Blue Marwong, Nannygai (best tasting fish ever!) and a single Scorpion Fish. Doddy the skipper was awesome, very friendly, catered to both the pro’s and the noobs on the boat and was the perfect gentleman always keeping my hooks baited up, so that I didn’t need to touch it. Highly recommended. Look him up if you are ever in Port Lincoln and want to get out on the water. No Snapper though, apparently they all went to Victoria. Bangg

I will get one by the end of this season, I don’t yet know how or when, but it will happen!!

Always have an fun time fishing

Bites on the line get the old heart racing and if you hook up..... Excitement!

Was out at my usual spot on the Yarra on Saturday. Lovely day for it. Managed to get two carp on the line, reel starts screaming, but the rod I discovered has quite a touchy drag setting knob thing. Both times, the drama of the line peeling off caused me to overtighten the drag and lose the fish. smh

Purple, haven't been out fishing as much as usual because I was training for the Spartan Race. Now that's over with until the next one in May, I came 1882nd lol, I'll be back posting with all my small :fish11: achievements off the various piers. Yay!!

Nice read! As far as I'm concerned, you are better off fishing regardless of results than not fishing. Now you will have to excuse me as I will be sifting through the terms of use of this sight to see if I can find anything in relation to displaying pics which clearly display 'cheesey' grins! If so, pls expect a lengthy ban! :-D
thanks
Jim

Edit: I hope you new purple rod is fitted with a 'Vella' reel!

Noooo.... If 'cheesey' grins are a bannable offense, I better start cleaning out my little desk at the Fishing Vic forums  What are the forums T&C's concerning shameless selfies? lol

I hadn't thought of the 'Vella' reel, but now I have plans. This could be the ultimate rod!

Great read sounds like you had a fun trip. You don't have to catch fish to have a good time they are a bonus. I had a close encounter with a dolphin off kilcunda he circled the boat and came up to me looked me in the face but wouldn't tke anything off me I think he was telling us to move away from the bait school he and his mates had driven into a ball but casting sp, s into it and catching the big couta,s he had no chance.
