Have you ever started off with a huge bang Adrian and started off with one of those dream sessions on your very first day of the season? :)
Each year the weather pays a big part at the start of the trout season here Lx, the best I've done on the first trip to a river was 14 browns way back in 2011. Good thing is when I have gone on my first trip I've always caught a few trout.... there's been many trout season opening weekends when I haven't even bothered to go out the door due to it being so wet & windy, plus it's still Winter too so the weather is unpredictable..
Not sure how I'll go tomorrow as there's a lot of snow melt coming down the rivers so they're going to be very cold.. There's been mornings when I could only have ten minute stints in the river due to it being so cold, I hop out for around five minutes then get back in and fish another ten minutes & just repeat the same thing over and over.. this is when " SAFETY MUST COME FIRST " do not take any risks, if you're unsure of the river such as it's depth & flow don't get in it. if you take a fall in fast flowing snow water you won't come out alive that's for sure.. My best fish taken at the start of the 2016/17 season went 2.65kgs (5lb 13ozs)
cheers
Adrian

Best of luck tomorrow mate. Hope you get off to a great start

Well the weather wasn't all that flash here today with a very cold 9 degree day & a gusty 30 kph Sth Westerly (wind chill factor 2.5 deg) saw me having a chat with a local farmer for around 40 minutes before I to have a 30 minute practice session in the small stream that ran though his property.. I wasn't overly fussed about chasing the trout in the conditions, just spent that 30 minutes sharpening up my casting accuracy after the three month lay off.. I did manage a follow from a very small non aggressive brown trout here.. 30 minutes was long enough too as it was bloody freezing..

Weather is suppose to be light 4-8kph Sth Westerly early before turning to a WNW later in the day, a severe frost warning is out as well.. water temp today was just on 3 degrees so I doubt I'll be doing much tomorrow.. Still a low of snow melt coming down the rivers & streams at the moment.. I'm in no rush to catch a trout yet.. still may go and have another short practice session though to hone up my skills for later..

Stream was a nice light tannin colour, water temp just too cold any way.
cheers

A couple of great pics Adrian.
They do look very fishy those spots!
Do you find it hard to get back into the swing of things after a 3 month break?

Wow that's cold.
Was the water very cold? Trout can be hard to catch when the water is super cold.

Yes the water temp was just on 3 degrees, that's why I wasn't overly bothered about covering just on 100 metres of water
that turned it into a short practice session..
The head shot of that trout gives you an idea of it's size more than the full body photo Seb,, that Austackle lure is 5 cms..

cheers
