Eucumbene river 7th-12th June '17

Post by Sinsemilla » Wed Jun 14, 2017 6:12 pm

I arrived at the Cool Mountain Lodge at Providence Portal at around 2pm and headed straight down to the river to have a look.
The river was very low with parts of the river being only ankle deep. I spoke to a few blokes who said the fishing had been very tough. I thought it would be without there being much rain and the water being so low and clear.

I got to bed early Wednesday night to wake up nice and early Thursday to walk as much of the river as i could to find some nice deeper runs or pools. after a massive day walking and no fish, and only seeing one or two landed i knew i'd have to be really persistent.

Friday was a new day and i started further up stream to some nice holes i'd found the day before. I picked up a nice fish on this day but was very tough going.

Because the water wasn't flowing that well it was very hard using glow bugs and nymphs down the whole river.. I turned to my trusty Nymph imitation soft plastic from strike tiger. They worked a treat.

On Saturday I picked up a 50cm brown just before the sun came up in a nice big pool just after a nice deep run.
My brother arrived at around 1 from Melb and met me on the spot i was at and we both picked up another fish each both on the Nymph soft plastics.

Sunday we did the same thing at the same spot. My brother stuck it out with the soft plastics and i kept changing it up between glow bugs and nymphs and the nymph soft plastic. I picked up 3 fish and dropped 5 and my brother landed 1 and dropped a couple.

Monday was our last day so we put a big day in. We headed to a nice deep run that we found was holding some fish so we just stuck it out at this one spot. We picked up a couple fish but nothing of size until just as the sun went down i decided to have one more cast before we left and fish on!
I landed a nice 50+cm male brown!

It was a really good weekend away to unwind. The fishing was hard but we persisted and got the results! Its days like these that make a fisherman!

All together i landed 8 browns 6 on the plastics and 2 on nymph/glow bug combo.

Cheers, Anth

Thats a great part off the world to fish.

Great read and a few really nice trout .

Did you have a crack upstream off the bridge....the trout smaller but good fun....and this time of year no black snakes to **** yourself over.

How much they charge to stay there per night?

Cheers bm

Cheers fellas. The full moon stopped me in my tracks. The picture came out good but nothing like what it actually looked like.

I tried further up stream but not much going BM. The trout were small and the river was very low.

The guys that got a lot of fish, fished at night at the mouth of the river. They were fly fishing using wolly buggers and some had glow beads as well. There is no way i was going out there in that cold!

The Cool Mountain Lodge was just over $100p/n but that was for a room that doesn't have a kitchen, so you have to use the kitchen everyone else uses.

Cheers, Anth
