I've often wondered that too. some years ago we went hunting on Flinders Island. Booked a half day fishing charter too. I've never SEEN such awesome kingie country! We caught a few too but small ones - only because the gear was so primitive. It would be just awesome to get down there and break it wide open. Cheers, Andy

I believe it is water temp, new zealand actually has quite warm waters around the north island. Currently the majority of the north island has water temperatures above 16 degrees whereas virtually none of victorias waters are this warm. The Kingfish in New Zealand can also be found further south in summer.
