I've tried it a few times but the most I've managed was a mullet.
I use an 8 weight rod with an intermediate sink tip line, allows the fly to hit the bottom in 1-2 metres of water pretty quickly.

As some.have said getting to the bottom could be a issue.
Could you put a split shot to help sink

I was thinking that when i go out i might take the light spinning gear as well and do some prospecting with soft plastics, then switch onto fly when i've tracked em down.

I used to catch them in NSW from the around oyster racks and sand flats when targeting Bream. They are fun and go hard. Be prepared to lose a few flies though, as their headshakes tend to saw through tippets. I was using little shrimp pattern flies, slowly working them along the bottom. Though I've also had them take surface and top-water flies as well in shallow water. All this fishing was done in no more than waist high water.

Locating them has been my problem as well. In a river I can locate fish pretty consistently, lakes and open water not so much.

nice to see some fluff chuckers come out of the woodwork. I haven't targetted flatties on fly yet but i've got an inter line for my 6wt that'll do the job. been meaning to wade some bay beaches for them. from what i gather, north melb, carrum/parkdale and the area around dromana are pretty good
