Afternoon on the Toorongo River

Postby pwalnuts » Mon Mar 05, 2018 11:15 am

Managed to get away for a fish on the Toorongo River yesterday afternoon, picked up half a dozen browns and missed the take on several others. Most fish were taken on bead headed pheasant tail nymphs fished under a foam body caddis. My initial plan was to fish the upper Tarago river but it was running very slow and low so I headed over to the Toorongo. Turned out to be a very productive afternoon. Please excuse the mediocre photography.

Don't often use the word pretty except for females, of the human kind, but they are some pretty looking trout with those red markings on them. Remind me of the trout me and my Dad used to catch years ago when I was a kid in the really small streams we went to a few times and I can't for the life of me remember where they were these days other then they were Trentham way. You could jump across them in places. Good stuff mate, brought back some fond memories.

I reckon a bead head nymph is one of half a dozen must have flies in the fly box. I bet you had a ball - and the pics are just fine.

Best Wishes

Thanks all. The fish were in really good condition, only around the 30 cm mark but beefy.
I fished the Steavenson River on Monday for pretty similar results, with a couple of rainbows thrown in. Despite running into a few guys who'd been up the river before me there were plenty of fish about.
Decided to go fish the Goulburn on the same day but that was a bust. I should have checked the flow beforehand as it was way too high. 9500meg outflow apparently, the highest I've seen it in a long time
