With the trout season opening only a couple of weeks away I had a nice surprise this morning when Pam walked in and gave me a package that she had picked up at BCF..

Having severe lower back & hip problems and suffering with angina Pam went bought me a GME personal locator beacon. I have been thinking of getting one for quite some time mainly because I always fish the rivers on my own. This one also has GPS which will put me a 5 meter radius of being found which is better than a 5 kilometer range.

So I registered it this morning and it's all go from now.. Let's hope I don't have to use it..

Is she telling you that you should wear a self inflating PFD as well?

I plan to use both when September comes as I have some health issues myself.

You can never be too careful mate especially when fishing alone.

That's an awesome wife you have there Adrian hats off to her mate :thumbsup: it will give both of you peace of mind on your future trips.

Thanks guys, yes she is a great wife that's for sure, and it will give her peace of mind too, it's my fishing alone that really worries her the most.. A lot of areas here are out of range for mobile phones too.. I have a 80 channel Uniden CB radio installed in the car but if one can't get to it then it's useless and that's where the PLB will be great if needed.. I also carry a small hand held Uniden walkie talkie sometimes when I'm fishing more open and accessible areas and that has a 10km range.
As for a PFD I'm never in deep water at any stage with fishing rivers, though I did think of it a few times..

Adrian as you know you don't have to be in deep water to drown, if you trip and hit your head on a rock or log you could be rendered unconscious or semi unconscious, a quick pull on the cord of an inflatable life vest could be a life saver, with these new types they are so comfortable you forget you have one on, I'm a shore based angler fishing mainly salt water on piers and rocks, I'm not as agile anymore so I wear one under my jacket all the time now, you should to.

I picked up a PLB this trout season, and also have a walkie-talkie similar to what you have mentioned. They definitely give a bit more comfort to me when thinking about worse case scenarios out in remote areas, hopefully provides the wife with the same.

I have that PLB on my pfd when I'm out on my yak with VHF Handheld & mobile in waterproof Lanyard. Every now & then I do a self test to make sure it's good

Good stuff Pam, it concerned me that you walk miles (ok kilometres) in rivers, with your bad back etc.
It worried me that your back might "freeze up" and you can't move.
Think about a PFD as well
