bronze whaler, top end
hey there everyone, fished top end of westernport yesterday 27/12 chasing bronzies/toothy sharks. Launched at warneet at around 6am. Headed to lysaughts to see if we could find some fresh bait and also had a crack for a red. After a few hours of annoying little stuff we had enough an headed to the top channels to see if we could tempt a toothy. Arived on our mark at around 10.30 and deployed the big baits. Also threw out a few smaller baits and tried for a gummy. After about an hour of burlying and releasing 3 small gummies, one of the big baits had a few taps and a short run, but droped the bait. 5 minutes later he was back but again another short run an droped the bait. We rebaited an set the balloon out again, and half an hour later my little brother was onto his first bronzie. After about 20minutes of fighting it out the shark was boat side and we got our first look. Took around another hour to finally tire him out enough to get it into the boat. Shark was caught on half a tuna. After that we were all to buggered to do anymore fishing and called it a day.

Cracker bronzie mate. Few boys here are looking to chase them in wpb. What kind of rig were you using for the tuna bait?

hey ducky, this one was caught on my brothers new outfit (overkill but he wanted to use it). its a tld50w running 80lb mono, and a 1000lb wire trace with i think a 12/0. we usually use a tld20 and 25, with 50lb braid and a 6m wind on 100lb mono shock leader, with a 3 or 4 metre wire trace. an then just run a balloon around 6metres up from the hook an float it out with plenty of burley. got 2 last week aswell, one was much bigger than this at an estimated 130kg+ and the other at 4ft. will post a few pics if i can find them.

Plenty of them out there missed 3 or 4 hook ups last week aswell. Just gotta be persistent. Heard some reports of some monsters out from lysaughts that couldn't be stopped. So may have to venture there in the next few weeks. Also found that the way the hooks are rigged plays a big part in the hookup rate. will see if I can draw a pic on the best way we've found to rig a bait.

Appreciate the replies mate. Diagram on the rig would be awesome. Sounds like standard mako rig.
Fishing using balloons on a wire trace you fishing them mid water column or further up? Definitely gonna start packing one heavy artillery rod each time I hit up westernport from now on. Was talking about it in another thread recently.

Re: bronze whaler, top end
we have found them right threw the water column mate, but the last month they seem to be cruising higher up. this is how we rig, not sure exactly how everyone else does it, an not saying this is 100% right an others are wrong. but it works for us
